Asked by real estate agent JUSTIN SCOTT to open the backyard of his clients HISTORIC BEND CRAFTSMAN for an evening, culinary director HECTOR “BOO” SANCHEZ of BOS TAURUS gives us the unfiltered, family-style truth about turning a GARDEN DINNER into a night of good food and good cause for PEACE BRIDGES.
A Garden Dinner for Peace Bridges at 425 NW State Street
Last Month, the backyard of 425 NW State Street hosted a family-style garden dinner in support of Peace Bridges, a Bend-based nonprofit founded in 2005 by John Schwechten and CJ Anderson. The organization's roots are local. In 2008, the Bend City Council proclaimed the Portland Avenue bridge over the Deschutes River "The Peace Bridge of Bend." However, the impact of John, CJ, and their friends reaches Kibwezi, Kenya, where Peace Bridges operates a children's home and school for girls. Of the 23 girls currently supported, ten have gone on to college, and three are in high school.
Dinner was prepared by Chef Hector "Boo" Sanchez, culinary director of Sixtop Restaurant Group and head chef at Bos Taurus, the ten-table steakhouse in downtown Bend known for its A5 Wagyu and Spanish-influenced menu. For the evening, Sanchez brought that same attention to ingredient and technique to a long communal table set under the trees, serving guests family style in a setting built for exactly this kind of gathering.
The home itself, a 2008 custom Craftsman in Bend's Historic District, was a fitting host. Its backyard, bordered by mature landscaping and designed with entertaining in mind, offered the kind of private space that made our peaceful evening feel unhurried, more like a dinner among neighbors than a formal fundraiser. 425 NW State Street is currently listed at $2,095,000.
The dinner raised $5,107.74, which was very helpful to Peace Bridges' $10,000 year-end fundraising goal, with the remainder targeted for the remainder of the year. It was a good reminder that a well-designed home can do more than shelter a family; for one evening, it brought neighbors and a community of friends together around a shared table for a cause worth supporting.
